Year 12

Unit 1—The later Tudors 1547-1603

The Mid Tudor Crisis: problems with having a boy as a king, issues with having a woman as a queen in the sixteenth century, social and economic problems between 1547-1560, the Reformation, rebellions under Edward VI and Mary I. Elizabeth and religion. The Elizabethan Settlement, Mary Queen of Scots, the Northern Rebellion, the Papal Excommunication. Nature of Elizabethan government. Elizabeth and how she used her gender, the issue of marriage, the court, Elizabeth’s relationship with Parliament. Social and Economic problems. Poor laws, domestic effects of the War with Spain, Oxfordshire Rising, the Essex Rebellion.

Unit 2 – The Cold War in Europe 1941-1995

The start of the Cold War, the situation in 1941, the liberation of Europe, the Tehran, Yalta and Potsdam Conferences. The Cold War 1946-1955. The Iron Curtain Speech, the Truman Doctrine, the Marshall Plan, the Berlin Airlift, the arms race. The Cold War 1956-1980. The Hungarian Rising, the Berlin Wall, the Prague Spring, the space race, Détente, the SALT talks. The end of the Cold War 1980-1995: Problems in the USSR, the policies of Reagan and Gorbachev, the collapse of the USSR, the civil war in Yugoslavia.

Year 13

Unit 3: Russia and its Rulers 1855-1964

The assassination of Alexander II. The Revolutions of 1905 and 1917. The rules of Lenin, Stalin and Khrushchev. The impact of Communist policies in society and on the economy. The impact of the Second World War and the Cold War on the USSR.

Unit 4: Coursework – the Later Tudors 1547-1603

The coursework is on the Later Tudors. It consists of a 4000 word, university style, essay questions. There will be a choice of questions focusing on the success of Elizabeth and her policies. For example, how successful did Elizabeth solve England’s religious problems 1547-1603? How successful was Elizabeth in using her gender to rule England 1547-1603?

  • Unit 1: the Later Tudors 1547-1603 Written exam – 1 hour 30 mins (25%)
  • Unit 2: the Cold War in Europe 1941-1995 Written exam – 1 hour (15%)
  • Unit 3: Russia and its Rulers 1855-1964 Written exam – 2 hours 30 mins (40%)
  • Unit 4: the Later Tudors 1547-1603 Coursework (4,000 words) (20%)
