A Level Mathematics at Ashton Sixth Form College

Course description

Mathematics is the application of a limited number of methods to a never-ending number of problems. It can be used to solve many practical problems in a variety of areas such as architecture, business and science. This course covers a mixture of pure mathematics, and mechanics or decision or statistics.

Course content

Pure

Builds upon the techniques in Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry and Calculus developed from the Pure Core units as well as introducing topics such as complex numbers, matrices, proof, hyperbolic functions, polar coordinates and differential equations.

Decision

Includes topics such as networks, algorithms, sorting, linear programming, mathematical modelling.

Mechanics

Includes topics such as forces, energy, motion, kinematics, projectiles, mathematical modelling, moments, collisions and stability.

Entry requirements

Minimum 5 GCSE grades A*-C

Grade C - GCSE English Language

Grade B - GCSE Maths (Higher Tier)

Assessment

100% Exam

Future opportunities

Maths students progress onto a wide variety of degrees and careers. Last year 86% of students moved on to Higher Education and 4% secured employment or a place on an apprenticeship.
