Fashion and Textiles Level 3 Diploma at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College*

Course description

Found yourself flicking to the fashion pages of magazines to check out the latest trends? Can you put together trendsetting outfits at the click of a finger? Do you have to feel every garment in a shop to find out the texture of the fabric, or wonder "how did they make that?". Then a course in fashion and textiles could truly be for you! Fashion is an exciting, diverse, challenging and international industry. The course's philosophy is to nurture innovation and originality alongside the development of an industry- relevant tool-kit of essential skills. In addition to building an individual portfolio of broadly developed work, your work will be showcased in a highly professional and exciting end-of-year fashion show, where people flock to sit in the front row.

Course content

The course is designed to ensure that you have the utmost opportunity to expand your creative skill base and introduces you to a wide range of skills and disciplines, such as:

You will also combine design skills with those core to fashion and textiles, such as Drawing, Illustration and Design Development, through sketchbook work.

  • Printmaking
  • Pattern cutting
  • Experimental Shape-making
  • Sewing skills
  • Fabric manipulation
  • Surface design
  • Textiles – including knitting, embellishment and dyeing experimentation.

Entry requirements

You will need to show passion, enthusiasm, commitment and have a portfolio of work to show at interview. You will need 5 GCSEs at grade 4 (grade C) or above, including English and/or Maths, or a Level 2 Diploma in Art & Design with merit or distinction grades, and a proven record of attendance and engagement in English and Maths

Assessment

Project work is set with structured achievable targets organised around practical assessment. You will also discuss project work through group critiques, with verbal feedback from tutors and peers. Regular tutorials and reviews will take place with your personal tutor to discuss targets and progress.

Future opportunities

Most of our students go on to Higher Education, Apprenticeships or employment. Our students can progress to the best degree courses in the country in every subject.

There are many different jobs in the Fashion and Textiles industry, including: design, styling, dressmaking, marketing, management and specialised textiles opportunities in print, knit and weave for fashion or interiors.
