Music at Kesteven Grantham's Girl School
In this course you will develop your skills in performing, composing and listening. You will encounter a wide ranging repertoire of music and, if you are interested in Music Technology, you will also have ample opportunity to develop these skills.
The first unit is a performance examination, which includes a short solo recital and a performance on a second instrument or within an ensemble.
A2 level extends the studies introduced in AS level. The recital in the performance unit should be longer and is accompanied by a viva voce on aspects of performance. In unit two students complete a portfolio of pastiche exercises and a composition from a choice of vocal writing, programme music or film score. The examination includes listening tests and essay questions based on areas of musical study.
Students preapre a recital of between 8 - 10 mins which is performed and marked by a visiting examiner. One compostion demonstrating the music techniques and conventions associated with the Western Classical Tradition and One Free compostion. Two part listening examination: Part 1; appraising test from set works and Part 2; aural perception (melodic dictation, keys, chords, cadences) based on unprepared musical extracts.
The normal criteria for entry are: Passes at A*- C in both English and mathematics 6 A*- B grade GCSEs A grade B or above in the subjects you wish to study at Advanced level.
