Public Services Diploma (Level 1) at Leeds City College

Course description

Are you interested in working in the emergency services or the armed forces? Although you will be expected to demonstrate high levels of self-discipline in terms of attendance, punctuality and behaviour, your course will focus on promoting positive attitudes through fun, challenging teamwork and fitness activities.

You will benefit from meeting people currently working in the emergency service and armed forces. You will be able to interact with public service personnel and find out first-hand what it would be like to have a career in various public service sectors.

Entry requirements

Students wishing to enrol to a Foundation Learning programme will come with a range of qualifications which would include GCSE's, units of qualifications already taken or have few or no qualifications. All students will be required to develop skills in Personal and Social Development, Employability, a vocational qualification and Maths, English and ICT. Each student will be invited to an interview where a personalised learning programme can be discussed and agreed.

All candidates must have a genuine interest in working in the emergency services or armed forces, be prepared to participate in physical activities, work in a team, overcome personal challenges and have an enthusiastic approach to learning.


There are no exams on this course. However, you will be required to submit evidence of your learning.

Evidence will include videos, presentations, practical demonstrations and written work.

Future opportunities

Advice on careers and further study will be given during the course. After successful completion of the course, students may seek employment or an apprenticeship in the public sector or apply for a level 2 course in Public Services.

English and Maths will be built into your course if your grades are below 4/5.
