Sport and Physical Activity Development BTEC Level 3 at Wilmslow High School

Course description

A BTEC Extended Diploma is an academic, practical and vocational course. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations and activities in addition to a number of externally set tasks and exams.

The course will develop your academic understanding of the sports industry. In addition, you will augment your vocational skills through assisting PE teachers and coaches in lesson support, local primary school sport or extracurricular clubs. Moreover, you will develop your sporting performance through individualized training programs and expand your personal skills through sports leadership and a range of events, trips and residential study visits.

The course is equivalent to three ‘A’ levels which means when you have finished the course you can choose whether to get a job straight away or go into higher education first.

Entry requirements

You will need to have at least five GCSEs at grades A*- C and it is highly recommended that this includes at least CC grades in English language and mathematics.

Assessment

The course is made up of 15 units (or subjects) which cover the broad range of the sports industry. 12 of the units are assessed internally through the production of a portfolio of evidence. This evidence is generated through written assignments, presentations or practical demonstrations. 3 of the units are assessed externally through an exam and set tasks.

  • Sports Injury Management
  • Rules, Regulations and Officiating in Sport

The externally assessed units that are assessed by Pearson by a set task or a written exam set and marked by Pearson are as follows:

  • Anatomy and Physiology
  • Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport and Well-being
  • Development and Provision of Sport
