Music at The Warriner School

Course description

The music A level course offers a flexible specification that encourages diverse approaches to the studying of music. There are specialist Advanced GCE options in performing and composing and plenty of opportunity to use of technology as a compositional tool.

The course is divided into six units with units 1, 2 and 3 comprising the AS qualification with units 4, 5 and 6 being known as A2 units. The specification is designed to allow students to study music in an integrated way with the opportunity to specialise at Advanced GCE. It allows students to study music as a practical, intellectual and creative subject with specialist pathways in performing, and composing. It recognises that we live in an age of cultural diversity and the Areas of Study cover a wide range of music: classical, world, popular and jazz.

Each area is seen within a broader cultural and historical context.

There are three units which make up the AS music qualification. Two of these are practical units and the third is assessed by exam.

There are three further units making up the A2 course and completing the A level course. Once again, two of these units are practical and the remaining unit is assessed by exam.

Entry requirements

Students must have achieved at least a grade A in GCSE music.
