Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Diploma Level 1 at St Helens College

Course description

With this course, you'll be learning all of the basic skills needed to secure a successful career in the automotive industry.

You'll be in our automotive hub, discovering how spark and compression ignition engines work, learning about the importance of cooling and lubrication, as well as steering, braking and suspension.

Course content

During this course, you will cover the following units:

  • Health and safety
  • Tools and equipment
  • Spark and compression ignition engines
  • Cooling and lubrication
  • Steering
  • Suspension
  • Braking systems
  • Electrical systems
  • Ignition systems on both petrol and diesel vehicles

An additional qualification will be offered as part of your main course; personal and social development for the automotive industry.

Entry requirements

You'll need GCSE English and maths at grade D or above. You may also need to pass an initial assessment at St Helens College.

English and maths forms an important part of your future, ensuring you achieve the best success in your chosen career. But don't worry, if you haven't got the desired grades, we will still have a course available for you.


You will be assessed by completion of module packs, two online examinations, workshop practical assessments and e-portfolio submission.

Financial information

If you are a school leaver, aged 16-18, (under the age of 19 on or before 31st August 2016), you do not pay tuition fees or examination and registration fees and may be eligible for additional support depending on your financial situation. 

Future opportunities

Upon completion of this course, you may choose to continue your studies with us at level 2 or even move onto an apprenticeship.
