Business Studies A-Level at Diss High School

Course description

A Level Business is a stimulating course which is relevant to people’s lives after education. The course deals with the way business activity and government constrains affect our everyday lives. The course aims to equip students with some understanding of how to become effective in the world of work.

Course content

There will be the opportunity to study a wide variety of business topics, including: ‘Business objectives and strategies’; ‘ How the external environment impacts on strategy’; ‘ The role of Human Resources, Marketing, Operations management and Financial management in the running of a business’; and finally ‘ How businesses operate in a wider global environment’. These topics are all examined at the end of Year 13. There are three exams design to test a variety of skills including: knowledge and how it applies to a business; analysis of information to understand the reasons why something has happened; and some evaluative skills where assessment and judgements are given and justified using your extended business knowledge. All exams are two hours and have pre-issued resource materials upon which the majority of the questions are based. The exams are all synoptic, so any area of study from the two years can be tested at any point in the exams.

Entry requirements

You are required to have at least five Cs at GCSE including Maths and English Language at Grade C.

Subject Specific

English Language grade B

Entry requirements – 5 A* - C grades. These will need to include Maths and a B in English Language. Students will be required to use numerical skills and be able to write fluently, using a wide vocabulary, throughout the course. Although it is useful, it is not necessary for you to have studies GCSE Business Studies.

Future opportunities

Universities offer a wide range of Business linked courses, ranging from Pure Accounting, Marketing and Operations Management, to Business Studies with Physics. There are many opportunities open to successful business students.
