A Level English Language at Huddersfield New College

Course description

You will study topics which reflect the development and use of the English Language including:

• Language in context
• Language and identity
• Child language acquisition
• Crafting language
• Language investigation
• Historical variation 

Course content

Your lessons will involve a mixture of language theory and practical textual analysis. You will also develop research skills through wider reading for your Creative Writing module. You will be provided with excellent resources and student notes.

You will also develop analytical and problem- solving skills that are valuable in a wide range of occupations and activities. 

Entry requirements

Grade 5 in GCSE English Language.

General entry criteria will also apply, this is available on our website.

Assessment

You will be assessed by three written examinations at the end of two years (80%) and a portfolio of two creative pieces (20%).

Future opportunities

There are some careers that are obvious matches with English Language such as: journalism, creative writing, teaching, teaching English abroad, speech therapy, business and advertising. There are also some less obvious careers that would also benefit from studying English language such as computer coding, law and forensic linguistics.

There are few potential career paths where the ability to communicate effectively would not be an advantage.

English Language offers a number of choices of courses at university, from pure language study to a more modern Language and Linguistic modular degree. English Language also supports a pathway into technical subjects such as Natural Language Processing modules in I.T. university degrees and careers.
