Course content

The specification for the subject seeks to encourage an understanding of the overall needs of young children and the social and environmental influences which affect their development in a contemporary, changing and multicultural society. The subject covers the following areas: v Parenthood and pregnancy. v Physical development of the child from birth to five years. v Nutrition and health of the child from birth to five years. v Intellectual, Social and Emotional development of the child from birth to five years. v The family and the community.

Assessment

Assessment 1 external examination sat at the end of year 11 worth 50% of the marks 3 pieces of coursework which includes: v An individual task which is a problem solving and investigative piece of work and must include the observation of a child or children up to their 5th birthday. This is worth 30% of the assessment for the course. v Two resource tasks which are short focused assessments with the emphasis placed on the implementation of practical skills. This is worth 20% of the assessment for the course.
