Chemistry A Level at Dartford Grammar School for Girls

Course description

Chemistry (Pearson 9CH0/01,  9CH0/02, 9CH0/03 and 9CH04/04)

Paper 1: (Advanced Inorganic and Physical Chemistry):

Atomic Structure and the Periodic Table, Bonding and Structure, Redox I & II, Inorganic Chemistry and the Periodic Table, Formulae, Equations and Amounts of Substance, Energetics I & II, Equilibrium I & II, Acid-base Equilibria, Transition Metals.

Paper 2: (Advanced Organic and Physical Chemistry):

Bonding and Structure, Redox I, Formulae, Equations and Amounts of Substance, Organic Chemistry I, II & III, Modern Analytical Techniques I & II, Kinetics I & II.

Paper 3: (General and Practical Principles in Chemistry):

Conceptual and theoretical understanding of experimental methods (indirect practical skills).

 

Utilising a range of teaching methods. All students will be taught by 2 teachers.

Entry requirements

Grade 7 ain Chemistry or grade 7/7 in the Chemistry components of Double Science Award.

Assessment

Each topic covered includes at least one test, graded to A level standard.

External examination and internal mock examination.

Paper 1: 9CH01/01: 30% of the total qualification

Assessment is 1 hour 45 minutes (90 marks)

Paper 2: 9CH01/02: 30% of the total qualification

Assessment is 1 hour 45 minutes (90 marks)

Paper 3: 9CH01/03: 40% of the total qualification

Assessment is 2 hours 30 minutes (120 marks)

Paper 4: 9CH0/04: Science Practical Endorsement

This qualification will give students opportunities to use relevant apparatus and techniques to develop and demonstrate specific practical skills.

Internally assessed and externally moderated practical activities.

The endorsement will not contribute to the overall grade for the qualification but the assessment outcomes will be reported separately on students' certificates as either 'pass' or 'fail'.

Veterinary Science, Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Forensic Science, Materials Science, Geology, Environmental Science etc.

Further information

Each degree course listed above can open several career paths. Many Chemists are involved in Agriculture, the Paper Industry and Brewing. Many accounting companies and merchant banks also consider the transferable skills from a Chemistry related degree course to be an advantage.
