A Level Chemistry at The Windsor Boys' School

Course description

The course is designed to build on GCSE knowledge allowing for pupils to have studied Dual Award Science to at least grade C level. It is challenging from the start for those pupils who have taken Dual Award and quickly becomes challenging for the Separate Science pupil.The concepts studied build on those already known and are studied to a depth to stretch even the brightest of pupils.

At A.S. Level

Unit 1 (6CH01) the Core Principles of Chemistry

Unit 2 (6CH02) Applications of Core Principles of Chemistry

Unit 3 (6CH03) Laboratory Skills 1; continually assessed practical work carried out during lesson time throughout year 12

At A2 Level

Unit 4 (6CH04) General Principles of Chemistry I – Rates, Equilibria and Further Organic Chemistry

Unit 5 (6CH05) General Principles of Chemistry II – Transition Metals and Organic Nitrogen Chemistry

Unit 6 (6CH06) Laboratory Skills II; continually assessed practical work carried out during lesson time throughout year 13

Entry requirements

Chemistry is a subject that contains aspects of Biology, Physics and Mathematics, therefore the entry requirement is a grade B in GCSE Chemistry (Separate Science) and a C grade in Maths. Pupils from the ‘Additional Science’ programme of study will need a minimum of B grade in their Chemistry module, and have achieved a B grade for Science overall.
