Childrens Care, Learning and Development BTEC Diploma Level 2 at Lancaster and Morecambe College

Course description

This is a one year full time course combining development of practical skills in schools and nurseries supported by College based study. The course provides the knowledge, understanding and competency necessary for employment within the childcare and education sector. 

Course content

During the course you will study different subjects which all relate to childcare and education including: • Children’s Development • Keeping Children Safe • Communicating Effectively with Children and Adults • Preparing and Maintaining Environments • Professional Development • The Importance of Play As part of the course you will also have to attend placement in a nursery/pre-school and school. This will give you the opportunity to apply what you learn in college to what you do, and see in placement. All LMC students will receive tutorial support and take a programme of Functional Skills. 

Entry requirements

You will need either: • 5 GCSEs at grade D or above, which must include either English or maths • Level 1 Childcare qualification, with excellent attendance and tutor recommendation • A positive attitude, a good work ethic and display desired behaviour. You will also have a successful interview and show commitment to working with children. To work with children, you must have a DBS (Disclosure Barring Service) check to show that you have no criminal convictions.

Assessment

This course is continuously assessed using a range of methods including completing assignments linked to each unit, in the form of essays, reports, presentations and displays. In addition, you also need to complete 300 successful hours in your placement experience.

Financial information

There will be the cost of educational visits which will be organised for you during the course. This means you will need to pay £20 when you enrol, there may be additional expenses also, depending upon the location/entry fee etc. When working with children, you will have to wear the college uniform. This too will be paid when you enrol, costing approximately: • Polo shirt - £12.00 • Sweatshirt - £14.00 (optional) 

Future opportunities

Successful students will be able to find work as teaching assistants, early years practitioners or learning mentors at Level 1 and 2. Students who gain an overall Distinction on the course, excellent placement reports, a grade C in either maths or English and a tutor recommendation may be able to progress onto the BTEC Level 3 in Children’s Play, Learning and Development or the Care of Children and Young People Apprenticeship.

Further information

You will be expected to undertake regular home study on this course. 

On completion of this course you will receive BTEC First Diploma in Children’s Care, Learning and Development.
