Accounting Level 2 AAT Foundation Certificate at Harrogate College
The AAT Foundation Certificate in Accounting is an ideal starting point for anyone wishing to pursue a career in accountancy or finance.
The purpose of the course is to offer grounding in the core accounting knowledge and skills needed to progress either to employment or to further study. This qualification is suitable for both school leavers and adults returning to work or wishing to change career.
The Foundation Certificate is open to those who are working and wish to develop their skills, and those who are not currently in employment. The course prepares the student for a position as an accounts assistant or book-keeper.
There are 5 compulsory units which are assessed by Computer Based Exams (CBA) and a Synoptic assessment which covers 4 of the units:-
Bookkeeping Transactions – CBA & Synoptic
Bookkeeping Controls - CBA & Synoptic
Elements of Costing - CBA & Synoptic
Work Effectively in Finance – Synoptic
Using Accounting Software (SAGE) – CBA
All exams are set and marked by the AAT at times set by the college for the CBA and the AAT for the Synoptic Assessment. An overall grade will be awarded to the student on completion of the course (Pass, Merit or Distinction).
One re-take is allowed per exam.
A student completing this qualification will develop skills in double-entry bookkeeping and will understand how to use journals, control accounts and a trial balance. Students will also learn how to use an accounting software package (SAGE), how to process financial information in accordance with company procedures and schedules, and how to provide information to colleagues, suppliers and/or customers as required.

The accountancy and finance knowledge in AAT Foundation Certificate in Accounting qualification is the underpinning knowledge needed for the higher-level accountancy and financial skills developed in the AAT Advanced and Professional Accounting Qualifications.
