Course description

The Retail Skills Apprenticeship is ideal for individuals looking to gain employment through practical working experience whilst studying for a nationally recognised qualification.This Apprenticeship framework is designed to meet the needs of employers and to provide a vocational pathway into various retail professions. The qualification will provide apprentices with the knowledge, skills and understanding required for both the perfromance of their job role and the support of their future profression within the retail sector.


The course includes a combination of mandatory units, which cover essential skills required within a retail sector, and a variety of optional units which are selected with the employer and focus on specific aspects within the individual job role.

Course content

The mandatory units:


  • Work effectively in a retail team


The selection of optional units include:


  • Assemble products for display in a retail enviornment

  • Maintain food safety while working with food in a retail environment

  • Pick products in a retail environment to fulfil customer orders

  • Assemble visual merchandising displays

  • Process returned goods in a retail environment

  • Keep stock on sale at required levels in a retail environment


The apprenticeship consists of several components each of which will be assessed in their own way. Assessment will take place in the workplace; your assessor will visit you on a monthly basis to work towards the evidence needed for your qualification.


NVQ- Combination of online exams and a variety of portfolio evidence including; work logs, evidence sheets, witness testimonies and workplace observations.


Employer Rights and Responsibilities- Successful completion of ERR Workbook


Functional Skills (Maths/English)- Achieve the required
