Geology AS & A Level at John Leggott Sixth Form College

Course description

You will discover the causes of catastrophic events such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslips and mass extinctions and learn about the structure of the Earth, the rock cycle, environmental issues and evolution.

Course content

AS course: 1st Year

  • Unit 1 - Global Tectonics and Geological Structures
  • Unit 2 - The Rock Cycle: Processes and Products
  • Unit 3 - Practical Skills in Geology

A2 course: 2nd Year

  • Unit 1 -  Environmental Geology
  • Unit 2 -  Evolution of Life, Earth and Climate
  • Unit 3 -  Practical Skills in Geology 2

Entry requirements

An interest in Geology, GCSE Science at grade C or above or a Level 2 vocational Science qualification (eg BTEC or OCR National) at Merit or above. You should also have GCSE English at grade C or above. GCSE average 5.0 or above.

20% practical exam

Future opportunities

You could move directly into employment with organisations such as local councils, natural hazards agencies or scientific research groups or go to university to study geology or other earth sciences such as geophysics, engineering geology, oceanography, environmental geoscience (natural hazards) or environmental science.

Further information

You will have the opportunity to take part in residential field trips to the Peak District and the Lake District as well as visit university geology departments. You could also get involved in community projects.
