Photography A Level at Bridgwater College

Course description

This course is intended for students wishing to learn how to take and make creative photographs. Ideally students will have studied art and/or photography, or be able to demonstrate a keen interest at interview via a set of photographs.

Course content

A variety of practical, theoretical and historical perspectives relating to photography as art, communication and illustration.

Both film and digital photography are taught on this course, topics of study include:

  • Skills in exposure theory
  • lighting
  • Studio/location shooting
  • Composition
  • Processing and printing in the darkroom
  • Scanning and manipulating images in Photoshop on Apple Mac computers
  • Presentation techniques

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs in the A* – C range, including Maths and English at grade C or above.

You must demonstrate a strong interest in photography via a portfolio of photographs. Ownership of a digital camera with manual mode is advantageous. To complete the full A Level you will need a pass in AS Level Photography at grade C or above.


You will be assessed via project work which will build into a portfolio.

Future opportunities

You will be able to pursue higher education opportunities in media across a range of specialisms at top-flight universities or remain in the region to study the FdA Media Production at Bridgwater College which has a substantial photographic pathway.
