Chemistry A-Level at Isle of Portland Aldridge Community Academy

Course description

Why study Chemistry?

Chemistry is involved in everything around us and can provide explanations as to why things work in the way that they do. Chemistry is the study of how atoms interact with each other, of how new substances are made and the roles they play in the world around us. As a fundamental part of science, chemistry knowledge is essential in order to understand and appreciate many other scientific disciplines. It can challenge the imagination in many ways.

What will I study?

Module 1 – Development of practical skills in chemistry includes: Skills of planning, implementing, analysis and evaluation

Module 2 – Foundations in chemistry includes: Atoms, compounds, molecules and equations; amount of substance, acid–base and redox reactions, electrons, bonding and structure

Module 3 – Periodic table and energy includes: The Periodic table and periodicity, group 2 and the halogens, qualitative analysis, enthalpy changes, reaction rates and equilibrium (qualitative).

Module 4 – Core organic chemistry includes: Basic concepts, hydrocarbons, alcohols and haloalkanes, organic synthesis, analytical techniques (IR, MS)

Module 5 – Physical chemistry and transition elements includes: Reaction rates and equilibrium (quantitative), pH and buffers, enthalpy, entropy and free energy, redox and electrode potentials, transition elements.

Module 6 – Organic chemistry and analysis includes: Aromatic compounds, carbonyl compounds, carboxylic acids and esters, nitrogen compounds, polymers, organic synthesis, chromatography and spectroscopy (NMR).

Progression and Career Opportunities:

The course will prepare students to progress into higher education, to follow courses in chemistry, pharmacy, chemical engineering, one of the other sciences or related subjects, or to enter employment where a knowledge of chemistry would be useful.
