History AS/A2 Level at Colchester Royal Grammar School
The department is committed to offering a range of topics across space and time. The course includes American, Russian and English history and the histories of the Korean and Vietnam wars. It includes History from a range of time periods, from the 16th to the 19th to the 20th Centuries.
The course will go above and beyond the requirements in many cases (for example, we do some theoretical work on the role of the individual in History in the course on Russian History)
The course involves the study of many themes, including: The impact of religious changes on politics and society (Tudor England, 19th Century America), the relationship between central and local power (Tudors, 19th Century America, Russia), the expansion of ‘empires’ (America, Russia), the growth and limits of democracy (America, Korea and Vietnam, Russia), revolution (America, Russia), the impact of war (Russian Civil War, American Civil War, Korean and Vietnam Wars).
Students will be encouraged to make a contrast between American history (based on representation, rights and notions of liberty and freedom) and Russia (for the most part an absolutist monarchy or a dictatorship).
The course is examined by Edexcel primarily through written exams. One of the four units is an ‘Independent Enquiry’ which means that the work is completed over the course of the year and is moderated by the History Department before a sample of work is sent to the exam board for the marks to be approved.
