AS Mathematics (Pure/Applied and Statistics) at Phoenix Academy

Course description

Mathematics (Pure / Applied and Statistics) The course aims are: to develop an understanding of Mathematics and mathematical processes in a way that promotes confidence and fosters enjoyment to develop the ability to reason logically and recognise incorrect reasoning, to generalise and to construct mathematical proofs to recognise how a situation may be represented mathematically and understand the relationship between ‘real-world’ problems and standard and other mathematical models and how these can be refined and improved to use Mathematics as an effective means of communication. Syllabus Edexcel (2007) The course is modular and will consist of three units: Unit 1: Pure Mathematics 1 (C1) AS Unit 2: Pure Mathematics 2 (C2) AS Unit 3: Mechanics 1 (M1) AS Features A few of the topics at the GCSE Higher tier are reconsidered at A level but, in general students will be studying mostly new topics and a much wider syllabus. Pure Mathematics will consider proof, algebra, co-ordinate geometry, sequences and series, calculus, and functions. On the other hand, Mechanics will consider mathematical models, kinematics, collisions and dynamics. As students progress throughout the two-year course, their mathematical maturity will increase and students will begin to appreciate the beauty and immense power of mathematics.

Entry requirements

Requirements A Level assumes that students will use the mathematical background and expertise developed at GCSE and a minimum of a Grade ‘B’ at GCSE is expected . Students must be willing to enter into a partnership with the mathematics staff in order to share the more extensive knowledge of mathematical collaborative ideas and methods.

Future opportunities

Mathematics is one of the oldest academic subjects. It therefore is well respected for university entrance and combines well with other A Level subjects, whether they are Art, Science or language-based.
