Physics AS/A2 at King Edward VI School, Stratford-upon-Avon

Course description

It is expected that students will achieve an A* or A grade in Physics in order to take this subject in the Sixth Form. A B grade is an absolute minimum. Dual Award Science is acceptable only for External candidates where A* or A grades would apply. Again B grades would be an absolute minimum.

Physics courses at 16+ are in-depth extensions of GCSE Physics. The topics studied are: Particle Physics, Mechanics, Waves, Electricity, Electromagnetism, Heat Materials, Fields and Atomic Physics. Many of these topics will have been started at GCSE level and every effort is made to ensure that the transition is a smooth one.

In common with GCSE, a strong emphasis is placed on practical work. Topics are introduced and developed through practical work. Theory is developed in parallel with this and there is an emphasis on understanding and applying physical principles throughout the course.

The topics studied are:

AS Examination

Unit 1 PHYA1:

Particles, Quantum Phenomena and Electricity

Unit 2 PHYA2:

Mechanics, Materials and Waves

Unit 3 PHYA3:

Investigative and Practical Skills in AS Physics

A2 Examination

Unit 4 PHYA4:

Fields and Further Mechanics

Unit 5 PHYA5C:

Section A: Nuclear and Thermal Physics

Section B: Applied Physics

Unit 6 PHYA6:

Investigative and Practical Skills in A2 Physics

Clearly there is much variety here – a good mixture of Basic Physics, Applied Physics (with Engineering links) and Contemporary Physics (including newer topics such as Nuclear and Particle Physics). Modules are taken in the January and June of each year. Mathematical skills which are essential are the ability to apply simple algebra with ease. Supplementary mathematics is provided as the need arises. The department has been successful in preparing the students for places at Oxbridge. This advanced Physics prepares students well for Physics Olympiad and as a transition to University studies in Physics and Engineering
