English Literature AS/A Level at The Open Academy

Course description

This course is the ideal course if you want to explore further the rich variety of literature in English. You will read a range of novels, plays and poetry, from classic to contemporary, and will study closely their social and historical background. You also will look at how readers have interpreted texts in different ways, and be encouraged to come to independent judgements about the ideas and attitudes in the texts.

You will learn how to analyse, interpret, compare and understand texts, how to construct an argument, elements of creative problem solving, the ability to evaluate the influence of various contextual factors, an understanding of different ways of reading and writing about texts and the ability to deal with unseen texts.

English Literature is a highly respected ‘facilitating’ subject that is directly relevant to a variety of courses and is valued in an enormous range of disciplines at university. You will develop the skills required for many careers, including media, performing arts, teaching or journalism.
