Business Studies National Extended Certificate/Diploma Level 3 at Dartford Science & Technology College

Course description

The BTEC National Extended Certificate in Business is equivalent to 1 A level. You will complete 3 compulsory units.

Unit 1 – Exploring Business: Learners will investigate the purposes of different businesses, their organisation structure, the effect of the external environment and how they need to be dynamic and innovative to survive.

Unit 2 - Developing a Marketing Campaign: Learners will gain an understanding of how a marketing campaign is developed as well as the skills required to develop a campaign.

Unit 3 – Personal and Business Finance: Learners study the purpose and importance of personal and business finance. They will develop the skills and knowledge needed to understand, analyse and prepare financial information.

Students will also study an additional optional unit on the English Legal System (Unit 23).

Please note; students who have a real aptitude for the subject may complete additional units to achieve the National Foundation Diploma (1.5 A levels)

The BTEC National Diploma in Business is equivalent to 2 A levels and completed over two option blocks. You will complete the same units as the National Extended Certificate plus

Unit 4 – Managing an Event: Learners will work as part of a small group to plan, coordinate and manage a business or social enterprise event and evaluate the skills gained.

Unit 5 – International Business: Learners study how UK businesses develop strategies to trade globally. Learners will also consider the factors that influence the implementation of these strategies.

Unit 6 – Principles of Management: This unit enables learners to understand how the role of management and leadership in the workplace contributes towards business success.

Students will also study an additional optional unit on Recruitment and Selection (Unit 8).

Entry requirements

A minimum of five 9-5 grades at GCSE or equivalent (BTEC subjects must be grade Merit or above). These should ideally include a relevant subject such as GCSE or BTEC Level 2 Business however this is not essential.

Assessment

All BTEC courses from 2016 have both external and internally assessed elements.

The BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Business includes a 2 hour written examination (Unit 3) and a synoptic assessment where students must respond to a case study provided by the examination board (Unit 2). All other units are internally assessed through coursework assignments.

The BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Business includes the assessments above plus an additional synoptic assessment (unit 6) and three additional internally assessed units.

Future opportunities

Upon completion of this course, you can progress to university to study a business-related degree. It gives you UCAS points and is recognised by higher education providers as contributing to meeting admissions requirements for many courses.

Alternatively, you can enter into employment or an apprenticeship.  Areas of employment include junior business roles in Administration, Finance, HR, Marketing and Events Management.

Further information

This course can be studied alongside other subjects such as, BTEC ICT and A Level Media Studies as part of a two year study programme.
