Sociology A level at Malbank School and Sixth form College

Course description

Sociology has been a thriving subject for many years at Malbank. Sociology habitually has excellent results , last year 83% of Sociology A2 students achieved A*-B grades. Teaching staff have over 20 years of experience in the subject and are enthusiastic and passionate about Sociology. The course is particularly interesting for students who are interested in how social class, gender, ethnicity, disability and age impact on life chances. ICT facilities are available in the social studies rooms that are vibrant with discussion of relevant topical subjects.

Course content

AS

  • Unit 1 - Family and households 1 hour exam 40% of the AS
  • Unit 2 - Education and Research methods 2 hour exam 60% of the AS

A2 

  • Unit 3 - Beliefs in society 90 minute exam 40% of the A2
  • Unit 4 - Crime and Deviance 2 hour exam 60% of the A2

Entry requirements

It is recommended that students have at least 5 GCSE's. It is helpful if English, History, Geography, Media Studies, RE, the diploma in Society Health and Development or Psychology have been studied successfully.

Future opportunities

Teaching, journalism, social work, health sector, business and retail sector, police and public sector jobs. This year some students are going on to study Sociology as a whole or as a combined subject although some have found that the subject has given them skills to do something completely different.

Further information

We have several visiting speakers including politicians, councillors and people from disabled and local ethnic minority and faith groups. We run a revision trip for students, usually to Manchester and ICT facilities are available for use during their free periods and lunch time.
