Course description

Outline of AS Syllabus
Candidates are expected to study:
Unit F661: Poetry and Prose 1800–1945: A selection of Emily Dickinson poems and the novel
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte.
Unit F662: Literature Post-1900: There is coursework on The Bloody Chamber by
Angela Carter, A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams and poems from
The World’s Wife by Carol Ann Duffy.
Wider reading is an essential part of the course.
Both units develop and assess written and oral communication skills; knowledge and
understanding of texts, language and structure; ability to make connections and comparisons
between different texts; informed judgements; and understanding of contexts.

Outline of A2 Syllabus
Candidates are expected to study:
Unit F663: Drama and Poetry Pre-1800: Shakespeare’s King Lear and drama and poetry
pre-1800. Study contrasts and comparisons between Songs of Innocence and Experience by
William Blake and ’Tis Pity She’s a Whore by John Ford.
Unit F664: Texts in Time: Comparison of three texts: The Miller’s Tale by Chaucer, The Bell Jar
by Sylvia Plath and monologues from Talking Heads by Alan Bennett. Questions are on narrative
or society. Students analyse language, form and structure; they need to show understanding of
the significance of the contexts and engage with critical opinions.
Wider reading is an essential part of the course and the same skills developed at AS level are
cultivated and advanced at A2 level.

Entry requirements

Essential Student Qualifications and Abilities
Two grade Bs in English and English Literature. A willingness to read and study independently.
Effective essay writing skills. The ability to meet strict deadlines.
Desirable Student Qualifications and Abilities
Excellent communication skills. The ability to work with others and independently.
A passion for reading.
