Team Leading Intermediate Apprenticeship Level Two at City College Plymouth

Course description

Are you a people person, happiest when working in a team? It doesn't matter what industry you work in, good Team Leaders are always in demand. Team Leaders play an integral role in supporting an organisations objectives: monitoring work, giving feedback, briefing teams, supporting team members, resolving problems, procuring supplies, project management and delivering good customer service. This qualification is suitable for people who are entering a management role, or who have the ability and the opportunity to demonstrate recognisable management and leadership skills, providing leadership for a team, encouraging innovation, allocating and checking work. This qualification recognises the skills of candidates in the workplace and provides individuals with the opportunity to demonstrate the competences needed for a career as a team leader. 

Course content

You will complete five mandatory units - which are standard modules regardless of the business in which you work, which will include workbooks/ self-study regarding the principles and understanding of business:

  • Manage personal performance and development.
  • Communicate work-related information.
  • Lead and manage a team.
  • Principles of team leading.
  • Understand business

In addition to these, you will choose units from a wide selection to fit around the job role you undertake, ensuring that you cover all of the criteria, whilst making sure you get the most from your training.

Functional skills - maths, English and ICT level 1 are studied, along with employment rights and responsibilities, and (PLTS) Personal Learning and Thinking Skills.

The course will also help develop independent enquiry, creative thinking, reflective thinking, team working, self-management and effective participation.

Entry requirements

Entry is via an initial assessment at the Work-based Learning department. 


All apprentices must complete initial assessments which cover maths, English and ICT. These are to ensure that you meet the requirements of the course and to demonstrate your ability to complete the qualification. It will also help the College identify any areas of support you may need. You will be required to complete a vocational - a paper based assignment where you will answer a variety of admin and customer service related questions and demonstrate how you would react in certain situations. 

Future opportunities

Intermediate apprentices, with support and opportunities in the workplace, may progress onto:

  • Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship in Management
  • other Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeships such as Business and Administration.
