History AS/A-Level at Highams Park School

Course description

History courses at Highams Park enable you to reflect and make sense of the world that we currently live in. Through a variety of topics including ‘Civil Rights’, ‘The Cold War’, ‘Women’s Rights’, ‘International Relations’ and Nazi Germany. You will develop the analytical and research skills that could be relevant for your future career. History is an important subject that is thought of very highly in all major Universities. A-Level History is a clearly planned course which builds on your skills and knowledge from lower school, you will develop sthe following skills: Ability to evaluate conflicting opinions Providing complex explanations Critical use of evidence Formulating coherent arguments Written and spoken expression

Entry requirements

An interest in history and the willingness to read around the subject is essential. Good written communication skills and the ability to read fluently with good understanding is also required.

Future opportunities

History students go on to become: Lawyers, Journalists, Writers, Managers, Teachers, Publishers, Leaders and Politicians. Employers respect and value the skills developed in studying History. You could take this course with other advanced level courses or equivalent to prepare for higher education in History or related subjects such as English, American Studies, Politics , Archaeology or more general courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to history by seeking employment in areas of heritage such as working for a museum or within education such as a teacher. The course will also help you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for.
