Engineering and Manufacturing Diploma Level 1 at Darlington College

Course description

This engineering course will provide you with a basic understanding of engineering systems and principles.

In addition to theory based lessons you will carry out practical work in the fully equipped engineering workshops. These sessions provide the opportunity to work on engineering machine tools and equipment, and learn some basic engineering skills including machining, maintenance, fabrication and welding.

If you have not achieved a C grade or above in English or maths, you will as part of your course be required to work towards this as part of your study programme.  You will be given the opportunity to go on work experience at certain times during your course.

To develop your employability opportunities you may also be given enrichment classes. This may focus upon additional qualifications, industrial updating and career preparation.

Course content

Teaching and learning is achieved by using a range of methods including taught classes, portfolio building, tutorials and workshops to support many of the unit assessments.

Entry requirements

You will require 3 GCSEs grades E or above including GCSE maths and English, as well as a satisfactory school report. A keen interest in the subject is essential. You will also need to attend an interview at the college.

Assessment

You will be assessed through; written portfolios, online and practical assessments.

Future opportunities

You will have the opportunity to progress on to the Level 2 Performing Engineering Operations Diploma, with further progression on to the Level 3 Diploma once the Level 2 has been completed.

Alternatively employment opportunities include engineering Apprenticeships, engineering technicians and skilled / semi-skilled operatives.
