Course description

A2 Level:

This course will consist of 3 examined papers, all taken at the end of the two years.

 

Unit 1 - Advanced inorganic and physical chemistry (105 minutes, 30%)

Unit 2 - Advanced organic and physical chemistry (105 minutes, 30%)

Unit 3 - General and practical principles in chemistry (150 minutes, 40%)

Questions in this paper may draw on any of the topics in this specification, from either paper 1 or paper 2. The paper will include synoptic questions that may draw on two or more different topics listed. The paper will include questions that assess conceptual and theoretical understanding of experimental methods (indirect practical skills) that will draw on students’ experiences of the core practicals.

 

Other course information

Alongside the A2 course there is also a science practical endorsement. This is a pass/fail assessment, consisting of 12 practical experiments, which is carried out in lessons over the two years of the course. It is internally assessed and externally moderated. These practical assessments no longer contribute to the overall grade achieved in the course. Despite this, there will still be plenty of practical work carried out in lessons to aid learning and further understanding of the course content.

 

AS Level:

This course will consist of 2 examined papers, each lasting 90 minutes and contributing 50% of the overall grade.

Other course information

Despite the fact that practical assessments no longer contribute to the overall grade achieved in the course, there will still be plenty of practical work carried out in lessons to aid learning and further understanding of the course content.

Entry requirements

The school offer for entry is a minimum of 5 A* (9) - B (6) grades at GCSE and a 5 grade in English and Maths GCSE.

Year 12 students must achieve a minimum of a D grade in the Internal Examinations to progress to Year 13.
