Business (Cambridge Technical Extended Certificate) at Allerton High School Business and Enterprise Specialist School

Course description

The Cambridge Technical Extended Certificate Level 3 Business course is a practical, hands on program for students who wish to develop their knowledge and understanding of the world of business.

You will study real local and national businesses, solve real business problems, and develop business ideas and strategies.

Whatever job you end up doing, the chances are that you will be working for a business. This course will equip you with the knowledge, skills and understanding you will need to succeed.

If you are interested in how decisions are made, in how businesses promote their products to make us choose one brand instead of another, and in how businesses can measure their success, then this could be the course for you.

You will learn about:

·         Providing good customer service

·         Business ownership and organisation

·         Communication within and between businesses

Course content

The course consists of five units, completed over the two years of study and is equivalent to an A level.

If you only want to study for one year, you will complete two units and this will be equivalent to an AS-Level.

In Year 13 you will complete three units.

In Unit 2 you will cover the skills and understanding needed to work effectively within a business environment, this unit will be completed in the second year and is assessed by an examination.

You will complete two more units in Year 13, the content of which has yet to be confirmed.

The course involves 3 mandatory and 2 optional units. The mandatory units are:

Unit 1: The Business Environment

In this examined unit you will develop an understanding of how and why businesses operate in the way they do. You will look at a range of different types of business and business structures, and explore how the ownership of a business and its objectives are interrelated. You will understand the legal, financial, ethical and resource constraints under which a business must operate and how these can affect business behaviour.

Unit 2: Working in Business

In this examined unit you will cover the skills and understanding needed to work effectively within a business environment. This includes arranging meetings, working with business documents, making payments, prioritising business activities and communicating with stakeholders.

Unit 4: Customers and Communication

In this coursework unit you will learn the purpose, methods and importance of communication in business and the appropriateness of different forms of communication for different situations. You will develop the skills that will help you create a rapport with customers and have the opportunity to practise and develop your business communication skills.

Entry requirements

You should preferably have studied Business or Business and Communication Systems at GCSE but this is not essential.  You should also have a minimum of 5 9-5 or equivalent Grades at GCSE including English and Maths.

Assessment

Assessment is through a combination of coursework and examination with grades available at Pass, Merit, Distinction, and Distinction*

These grades are equivalent to E, C, A and A* at A level
