English Literature A Level at Whitley Bay High School

Course description

Literature students have a love of literature and are curious, analytical in their study of texts and enjoy debating texts.

Course content

AS - Studying 4 texts from the Tragic tradition:

  • one a Shakespeare play (Othello or King Lear)
  • Arthur Miller's 'Death of a Salesman'
  • Selection of poetry
  • one of the following novels - The Great Gatsby or Tess of the D'Urbervilles

A2 - Topics covered:

  • Crime writing - Atonement or When will there be good news; Hamlet; Oliver Twist; Brighton Rock; The Murder of Roger Ackroyd and a selection of poetry, OR
  • Political and Social Protest Writing

Entry requirements

At least a grade B in GCSE Language and Literature.

Assessment

2x 1hr30 Examination for AS

1x 2hr30 Examination for A2

1X 3hr Examination for A2

Final Assessment includes two essays
