Course description

This course will cover all aspects of fundamental biology in plants & animals from cell structure & immune systems, to ecology & conservation. Biology would be useful if you were looking to pursue a career in any of the biological or natural sciences.

  • Genetic information, variation & relationships between organisms
  • Energy transfers in & between organisms
  • Organisms respond to changes in their internal & external environments
  • Genetics, populations, evolution & ecosystems
  • The control of gene expression

Paper 1: 2 hours – 35% of grade

Exam is made up of a mixture of short, long and extended response questions in two sections. The content of the exam focuses on topics 1-4, with relevant practical skills.

Paper 2: 2 hours – 35% of grade

Exam is made up of a mixture of short, long and extended response questions in two sections. The content of the exam focuses on topics 5-8, with relevant practical skills.

Paper 3: 2 hours – 30% of grade

Exam is in 3 sections. Section A contains structured questions, including practical techniques. Section B is a critical analysis of experimental data and Section C is an essay from a choice of two titles. All of the core content is covered.

Entry requirements

Grade 6 in GCSE Biology and Grade 6 in one other GCSE Science (6 in Double Science)

Grade 5 in GCSE Maths (Higher Tier) and 5 English Language
