Course description

If you enjoy creative thinking and developing imaginative solutions to complex problems or wish to progress to further education specialising in web design, software and App development and programming then this course is for you!

Course content

You will study 18 units over two years including topics such as:

Communication and employability skills for IT

Computer systems

Software design & development

Event driven programming

Controlling Systems Using IT

Procedural Programming

Systems Analysis and Design


Entry requirements

You will need to have a standard of literacy and numeracy at Level 2 supported by the equivalent to four GCSEs at grade C or above including English. You will also need to demonstrate excellent IT skills and show a keen interest in software, web, and programming.


You will be taught using a range of teaching techniques including lectures, web 2.0 tools, group work, quizzes and collaboration via the latest technologies. You will complete projects set with an employer focus and gain valuable experience through realistic working environments.

Future opportunities

You could specialise further in your chosen field of IT to a Higher Education degree course or progress to any of the very popular career routes in systems analysis, software development, animation, web authoring or Technical support specialisms.

    • Washington Campus an award winning campus that is home to Washington Sixth Form and our higher education provision. Located between Gateshead and Washington it was built on the site of the former Usworth School. It was developed to cater for up to 850 people from in or around the Washington area.

      The £10 million development provides an excellent learning environment for both academic and vocational course for 16 to 18 year old students, and also acts as our ICT specialist centre. It's equipped with the latest technology to ensure students experience the same systems used by industries in the real world and to help get them ready to move in to higher education or the workplace.

      Washington Campus is also the base for our higher education provision, providing a range of higher education coursesfor the region, from HNCs and HNDs to foundation and full degrees.

      There are also impressive enrichment facilities at Usworth with on site football and rugby pitches and a rec room fitted with a pool table, Xbox 360 and a chill out zone.
