Maths Functional Skills Developer : Level 1 at Gateway College
This course is designed to use maths in real life contexts. Students who are less comfortable with abstract maths often find they grasp Functional Maths more naturally. Emphasis is placed on practical activities that reflect real life scenarios that a person may encounter and be required to solve using logic and problem solving, e.g. planning a holiday/day trip, calculating how to split the cost of a journey/holiday, finding the best deal when purchasing items, finding the best paid job, etc. Students will be taught how to adapt to unfamiliar scenarios too, as well as thinking through problems and making use of flow-charts or diagrams to support the thought process. We encourage discussions and team-work, as these skills build confidence and this is key to being able to deal with daily maths problems.
During your enrolment at the college, your existing maths qualifications will be recorded. You will be allocated the course that matches your individual requirements. Within the first few weeks you will be asked to complete an initial assessment; which is not an exam. The results will confirm that you have been placed on the most appropriate course and identify your individual strengths and topic areas that need to be revisited.
There will be 3 hours of lessons per week.
This course is suitable for you if you have a grade 1 in GCSE Maths or have passed Functional Skills Maths qualifications at Entry Level 3.
Students will have one written examination at the end of the year. However, students who demonstrate a high level of commitment and Mathematical ability will have the opportunity to complete the exam early and then begin bridging towards Level 2 and in exceptional cases, take the exam within the same academic year, if deemed appropriate.
Free to all home students.
This course is designed to help learners develop the skills they need, at a pace that matches their individual capabilities, in order to progress successfully through Functional Skills Level 1 and Level 2 on to a GCSE qualification.
