English Language A level at Monks Walk School
This course provides a thorough grounding in the English Language looking at methods of exploring both spoken and written texts.
Students will learn how to understand the language of a range of texts by making links between them. They will also look at how cultural values and assumptions affect language and how language works in the contexts of power, gender and technology. The ways in which children learn to speak, read and write and the developments and changes in English over time will be covered in the second year of the course.
Students will be required to produce several pieces of coursework; these will include one or two pieces of original writing with a commentary explaining their choice of language. They will also undertake an independent investigation into an aspect of language that they can choose in consultation with their teacher.
English GCSE A*- B. APS: 40 or above.
This course is an excellent basis for further study or entry into a range of professions. It will prepare students well for careers such as journalism or copywriting, technology, law, medicine and teaching.
