Construction - Bricklaying Diploma City and Guilds Level 3 (CON1) at Barnsley College

Course description

There’s never been a better time to think about starting a career in the construction industry. With a 2.5% increase expected in the industry each year in the next 5 years, over 16,000 new jobs are expected to be created in Yorkshire and Humberside. As a bricklayer you could be a major part of this growth industry! It’s one of the most varied construction careers around, and allows you to work on a range of projects, from creating a single conservatory to building brand new homes or large commercial developments. You could also work on restoration projects, refurbishing brickwork and masonry. To become a bricklayer, you will need to be able to read plans and work in an organised way. If you enjoy doing practical things and you are interested in construction, this could be the perfect course for you.

Course content

Bricklaying allows you to work on a

range of projects, from creating a

single conservatory to building brand

new homes or large commercial

developments.

You could also work on restoration

projects, refurbishing brickwork and

masonry. To become a bricklayer, you

will need to be able to read plans and

work in an organised way. If you enjoy

doing practical things and you are

interested in construction, bricklaying

pricing construction work

• Constructing radial and battered

brickwork

• Carrying out decorative and reinforced

brickwork

• Constructing fireplaces and chimneys

Entry requirements

•Completion of Level 2 Diploma in Bricklaying

Financial information

Financial support

If your total annual household income is less than £35,000 you could be eligible for financial support through our Learner Support Fund for travel (up to £700), if your household income is below £20,000 you could be eligible for food, trips, printing, equipment and childcare. You don’t have to pay this money back.

You can pick up a Learner Support Fund application form from Student Services on the ground floor at the Old Mill Lane campus.

Guaranteed bursaries

If you are aged between 16 and 18 and currently living on your own, in care or leaving care, you could be eligible for a non-repayable bursary of up to £1,200 per year.*

Food

FREE bus services!

We realise that getting to and from college might not be very easy for everyone so we have funded four free return bus services for our students. They go to and from the Old Mill Lane campus which is just a few minutes’ walk from our Sixth Form college campus.

Shelley > Old Mill Lane campus

Stocksbridge via Penistone > Old Mill Lane campus

South Elmsall via South Kirby, Hemsworth, Kinsley, Fitzwilliam and Ryhill > Old Mill Lane campus

Rotherham via Ecclesfield and Chapeltown > Old Mill Lane campus

These bus routes are completely free for our students and operate on a first come, first served basis. Each route operates to ensure students get to college before lessons start and a return service is provided after lessons finish. Future opportunities

Successful completion of this Level 3 study programme could lead to progressing to a higher education programme at University Campus Barnsley such as the HNC in Construction and the Built Environment or a BSc in Project Management. Alternatively, you could use the qualification to improve your chances of gaining an Apprenticeship which will give you valuable work experience.
