Course description

We take a fashion focus for this course where students make their own patterns, which they adapt to make up their own designs. Fashion is an exciting vibrant industry with plenty of opportunities.

Course content

Module 1 Title Materials Components and Application

Looking at fibres and fabrics, yarns and weaves. Components.
Properties of fibres and fabrics
Pattern drafting making basic block pattern and designing own patterns
Manufacturing of textiles

Learning through Designing and Making

Pattern drafting making basic block pattern and designing own patterns
Making products – fashion items, dresses, jackets, corsets
Manufacturing of textiles
Design portfolio of work
You design and make your own choice of original fashionable items
Fashion designers
Product development
Marketing and business issues of textiles technology

Module 3 Title Design and Manufacture

Fabrics and fibres
Fabric construction
Technology of textiles
Product life cycle – fashion cycles
Marketing, sales and business of textiles
Designers and professionals in textiles industry
Environmental concerns
Global production of textiles products
Product manufacture

Design and Making Practice

Design and make portfolio
Students design, develop patterns and make their own original fashion design products

Entry requirements

Ideally Studied Textiles at GCSE, if not students will be considered as long as they are prepared to take extra lessons for an induction.


50% at AS and 50% at A2
Design and make projects in Year 12 and Year 13

Future opportunities

Previous students have gone on to study at the Royal College of Fashion, Nottingham Trent & other prestigious institutes in this area. We have ex-students working for Victoria Beckham, Vivienne Westwood, Forever 21, The Arcadia Group, Top Shop etc. and some have set up their own businesses. Textiles and Fashion careers, business, marketing, journalism within fashion industry, teaching, pattern cutting, fashion retail, fashion design.
