A2 Level Biology at Trafford College

Course description

A2 Biology builds on the knowledge gained at AS and looks in greater depth at aspects of human physiology as well as metabolic pathways. It aims to allow students to gain an understanding of issues of general interest and importance such as genetic modification and stem cell research as well as preparing students for higher education.There is a strong synoptic element in all three A2 modules, so knowledge of your AS work is important.50% of overall grade is carried forward from AS, though retakes are possible.Unit 4: Communication, Homeostasis and Energy is worth 15% of A2 level gradeThis is assessed through an external examUnit 5: Control, Genomes and Environment is worth 25% of A2 level gradeThis is assessed through an external examUnit 6: Practical Skills in Biology 2 is worth 10% of A2 gradeThis unit assesses practical and investigative skills developed within contexts encountered during A2 Biology.Students are required to carry out three tasks:1. Qualitative task (10 marks)2. Quantitative task (10 marks)3. Evaluative task (20 marks)Tasks will be chosen from a selection provided by OCR.The Qualitative and Quantitative tasks will test skills of observation and measurement.Students will carry out these tasks under controlled conditions.Each task will be internally assessed using a mark scheme provided by OCR

Entry requirements

A pass at AS level Biology, at least a grade D is recommended.


External exams in June plus internally marked practical assignments.

Future opportunities

A level Biology is an essential subject for Biomedical courses in Higher Education and useful in a range of environmental and Health Care careers.
