Art - Photography at The Sixth Form College Farnborough
This qualification allows you to deal with themes and messages on a visual basis. Photography is designed to encourage you to develop your creativity and self expression.
You will explore the world of visual images through a variety of exciting and stimulating photography-based projects based on using lens based equipment in a creative manner.
The course makes you think about visual communication and how imagery is used to communicate an idea or viewpoint of an individual.
Investigations into contemporary artists’ work and practical experiments help develop your own understanding of the creative process used in Art and Design Photography.
Equal emphasis is placed on
- the analysis of images
- technical learning
- creating a personal outcome through practical projects.
As well as using digital equipment, a variety of digital cameras, lenses and scanners in conjunction with Adobe Photoshop software, you will also be encouraged to spend time investigating analogue cameras and traditional darkroom techniques such as black and white printing.
At A2 the emphasis is more on practical investigations, exploring both artist and technique to gain an in-depth understanding of the process you apply within your photographic practice.
You will be expected to take responsibility for directing much of your own practical projects and research work.
You should have at least a grade C in GCSE English Language.
If you have studied Photography or Art to GCSE it would be advantageous but not essential.
Students who are keen to do A Level Photography but do not have C grades in either GCSE Art or English Language will be considered on an individual basis in September.
A keen interest in photography combined with enthusiasm and a willingness to work hard during lessons and in your own time are the most important requirements. To improve your background knowledge you may be required to attend practical workshops.
Students will need to be prepared to provide some of their own photography materials such as printing materials, both digital and traditional, which can be bought from the College shop.
The A Level components will be assessed through a personal investigation and an externally set assignment.
You may go on to study Photography on a Higher Education course or combine it with other creative subjects such as Fine Art, Interior Design, Graphic Design, Web Design, Multi-Media, Advertising or Video Production. Possible careers within Photography could include photographic professional practice, Journalism, Advertising, Media and Film.
What other subjects could I do with Photography?
With an emphasis on visual communication Photography combines well with a range of Art and Design courses, Media Studies, Humanities, as well as the Sciences.
