Mathematics - Further Mathematics Advanced Level GCE at Corby Business Academy
What is Further Advanced Level?
Its A-level Mathematics - only harder. You do twelve units in total to get two A Levels and the work you do in Y13 is the equivalent of first year degree work at some Universities. If you think you can get your head around topics such as matrix algebra, rigid body mechanics, regression and correlation, and Cartesian equations, it could be the subject for you.
Is this for me?
If you are a hard working well motivated mathematician who really enjoys algebra and problem solving. If you are going to get an A or higher GCSE grade and you want to go onto to study a pure maths degree or a strongly related subject such as engineering or to study to be an actuary. Then Advanced Level Further Mathematics is the course for you.
What courses does it go with?
You have to do A Level Mathematics and it goes well with the science courses or business and information technology.
What subjects will I study?
You will extend your knowledge into areas of pure maths, statistics, discrete maths and mechanics. You can only do Further Mathematics if you do Mathematics.
You will study another three units for the Advanced Supplementary Level and a further three in Y13 make up the Advanced Level.
1. Further Pure Mathematics 1
2. Statistics 1 or Mechanics 1
3. Decision 1
4. Further Pure Mathematics 2
5. Statistics 1 or Mechanics 1
6. Statistics 2 or Mechanics 2
In addition to your core studies you will also develop essential employment related skills in:
Application of number
Working as a team
You will need a minimum of an A in Mathematics and 5 C's at GCSE preferably including English and you have to take A Level Mathematics - you can't do this course on it's own.
Each unit is assessed by a short exam and graded as E - A with points awarded. At the end of the course the points add up to give a final grade.
This course is really for students choosing to continue with Mathematics at University, or to do a combined course such as Mathematics and Management or who want to do Engineering at a university such as Oxford or Cambridge.
It is also great for future Mathematics teachers!
There are literally thousands of courses and careers which are maths related and all future employers want staff with mathematical skills. This course is ideal for really stretching your brain and gives you the opportunity to learn things which will amaze other people.
Further Mathematics particularly relevant to the following careers:
- Armed Forces
- Electrical Engineer
- Gas Engineer
- Mechanical Engineer
- Web Designer
