Light Marine Engineering City & Guilds Diploma Level 3 at Falmouth Marine School

Course description

If you are considering a career in the marine industry and want to develop your skills in a specialised area, this one year, full-time course is for you.  You will gain valuable practical skills in all areas of marine construction, systems engineering and maintenance.

Course content

You will spend one full day in the engineering workshop developing you skills using basic hand tools, working on marine diesel inboard engines, outboard motors, gearboxes and shaft systems and ancillary equipment.

Practical learning is supported by theoretical study to cover all aspects of the marine industry for those studying at this level.  The City and Guilds qualification covers a wide range of marine related study, the Marine Engineering pathway covers:

  • Safe and effective working in the Marine Industry
  • Principles of Marine Construction and Components 
  • Installation and Repair of Marine propulsion Systems
  • Instillation and Repair of Marine Engines 

 

You also have the opportunity to develop knowledge of basic marine electrical installation and engine electrical systems.

Entry requirements

You will need a minimum of four GCSEs at grace C or above, including English, maths and science, or to have successfully completed the Level 2 Marine Engineering qualification with a credit grade. 

You will be required to attend an interview where you can demonstrate your interest in working in the industry; if you are an adult learner your previous experience will be taken into account.

Future opportunities

After completing the course, you will be able to find employment within the marine industry, either full-time or through an apprenticeship.  Alternatively, you could go on to further study at university level, such as the HNC in Marine Engineering.
