Applied ICT AS Level (EDEXCEL) at Ryburn Valley High School

Course description

You will study 3 units in Year 12. These can be summarised as: Unit 1: The Information Age In this unit you will learn about the information communication technologies that enable people to access and exchange information and to carry out transactions anytime, anywhere. You will take a critical look at the impact that the internet has had on the way people conduct their personal and professional lives, explore the services it offers and gain ‘hands-on’ experience of using some of them. This unit is assessed via the production of an e-portfolio.Unit 2: The Digital Economy In this unit, you will investigate how organisations are responding to the pressures of the e-marketplace by using transactional websites to and as an informed ICT user; you need to be aware of the methods used by organisations to persuade their customers to reveal personal information. This unit is assessed via the production of an e-portfolio. Unit 3: The Knowledge Worker In this unit you will learn about making informed decisions using the knowledge available to you. Decisions often have to be made within time constraints. You will learn how to manage your time effectively by prioritising tasks and setting interim deadlines. This work is completed solely using Microsoft Excel. This unit is assessed by a practical exam on the computer (2 ½ hours)

Future opportunities

You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses or to prepare for the A2 part of an Advanced GCE in Information and Communication Technology, which could lead onto higher education, BTEC Higher Nationals or NVQ Levels 3 and 4 in areas of information and communication technology or more general courses.With further training, you could go into a job related to ICT such as a Web Designer, IT Technician or Software Programmer.You could also go straight into a job as the AS GCE is a recognised qualification that will provide you with a good knowledge and understanding of ICT that many employers across lots of industries are looking for
