Media Studies at The King Edmund School
Media studies focuses on the production and consumption of a diverse range of texts. It develops the learner’s love of film, television, music and internet text, by considering both how and why entertainment is made.
As our society becomes ever more enthralled by screens of all sizes, an in
depth knowledge of media has never been more necessary. In this course,
you will take your love of media and explore it through a range oftheories
and exciting examples. A Level Media Studies explores the world of film,
music, television and beyond. You will analyse a variety of audio-visual
and print based texts from a variety of different perspectives. From how productions are created, to how they are consumed by their audience, you will explore a range of texts through the contexts of textual analysis, genre studies, examination of narrative conventions and consideration of issues of representation.
Topics studied across the two year course include the music industry, contemporary British cinema, the importance of the internet and representation in television programs. While learning exactly what techniques go in to creating a media text, you will use these skills to create your own media productions, ranging from magazine spreads to short films.
This course is 50% coursework based, and 50% examination based. A two
and a half hour examination is sat at the end of both years, with practical
assignments being completed throughout.
A Level Media Studies allows for considerable scope when choosing a career.
Media studies lends itself particularly well to jobs in journalism, advertising,
photography, multimedia specialism, social media strategy, video production
and related roles. As a multidisciplinary course, media studies also makes
for an excellent gateway to further/higher education courses in information
technology, design, social sciences and media production.
