Installing Electrical Systems Level One Pre-Apprenticeship at East Riding College

Course description

This course is for young people who want a career as an installation electrician. Learners will work towards the skills and knowledge needed so they will be ready to start an apprenticeship. This course is an ideal first step for learners looking for a career in the field of electrical systems installation.

The course is mostly practical work carried out in workshops and classrooms equipped with electrical and IT resources. Work consists of a series of practical tasks, with underpinning knowledge, ensuring that a range of necessary skills are developed throughout the course.

Course content

You will study the Level One NVQ Diploma in Performing Engineering Operations (Practical) with the following units:

  • Wiring and testing electrical equipment and circuits
  • Producing electrical components using hand fitting techniques
  • Working safely in an engineering environment
  • Working efficiently and effectively in engineering
  • Using and communicating technical information

Entry requirements

Applicants should have, or expect to gain, a minimum of three GCSEs at grade D or above to include maths and science. Learners will also have to attend a selection test and interview.

However, with three GCSEs at grade C or higher you could start on the Level Two Pre-Apprenticeship in Electrical Installation.

Assessment

The practical tasks that are part of this course will be tracked and built into a portfolio of evidence. Underpinning knowledge will be assessed with written and oral questioning.

Future opportunities

Learners who successfully complete this course and have not gained employment will be offered a place on the second year course, which is the Level Two Pre-Apprenticeship in Electrical Installation. This consists of the City and Guilds 2330 Level Two Certificate in Electrotechnical Technology.
