A Level

Component 1: Performing

  • Total performance time of 8 minutes
  • Solo and/or ensemble

Component 2: Composing 

  • 2 Compositions
  • 1 free or free choice brief - minimum 4 mins
  • 1 brief assessing technique - minimum 1 min
  • Together total min of 6 minutes

Component 3: Appraising

  • 6 areas of study with 3 set works in each
  • Vocal Music
  • Instrumental Music
  • Music for Film
  • Popular Music and Jazz
  • Fusions
  • New Directions

Entry requirements

Either GCSE Music Grade B or Grade 5 theory is required. Performing skills are also essential, ideally at the equivalent of grade 5 or above.

Assessment

Component 1: Performing

  • 30% NEA
  • Total of 60 marks 12 marks available for difficulty of pieces

Component 2: Composing

  • 30% NEA
  • 2 pieces 40 marks for free or free choice brief (4 min)
  • 20 marks for brief assessing technique Total of 60 marks

Component 3: Appraising

  • 40% exam
  • 2hrs
  • Total 100 marks

Future opportunities
