Photography at The Hewett School
The Photography A level encourages creativity and experimentation. You will be taught by an excellent team of people who believe in innovation rooted in technical skills and philosophical ideas.
We are looking for students with enthusiasm and commitment to experimental and exciting image-making, though previous experience in Art or Photography is not necessary.
You will start your AS course with a thorough introduction to camera skills, both 35mm and digital. You will work in our photographic studio, exploring the potential of lighting and backdrops in the production of high quality images. In one of our two darkrooms, you will learn how to make enlargements, photograms, and a range of experimental imagery. You are encouraged to develop your own themes and approaches, and are also required to support your creativity with in-depth written research and analysis. In the A2 course, you will extend your research skills through a formal written assignment that forms the basis of your coursework.
Throughout the two years, you will encounter exciting techniques and subjectmatter, and will work as an industrious and creative artist. You will develop understanding of the visual world that surrounds us, and the ability to excel as an image-maker in your own right.
You will need to have a 35mm SLR camera, and a compact digital camera. You will need to purchase some film, darkroom paper and A3 sketchbooks. However we will provide you with three computer suites equipped with Photoshop, two darkrooms, developing equipment for 35mm and medium format film, A3 flatbed scanners, a 35mm negative scanner, a photographic studio, access to colour photocopying, Canon EOS 450D digital SLRs, a library of photography books and excellent technical support!
Each year most of our photography students that apply are admitted to foundation and degree courses in photography and other creative arts areas. Recently students have started courses at Bournemouth, Falmouth, Norwich, St. Martins, London College of Printing and many other institutions. We have close ties with Norwich University College of the Arts and Wensum Lodge (Foundation). Photography is an area rich in career opportunities, from Fine Art photography to commissioned photography, advertising, design, journalism, forensics and medicine.
Photography also brings transferable skills to a whole range of activities (such as research, documentation and communications) within the sciences and humanities.
