English Language A Level at Oakbank School

Course description

For AS, the prescribed area of study is the Literature of World War One; for A2 it is Love through the Ages. You will learn to read widely, critically and independently and to make creative, informed and relevant responses to poetry, plays and prose using appropriate terminology and coherent, accurate written expression. You will learn to analyse the structure, form and language used by writers to shape meaning and achieve effects.

You will learn to compare different literary texts and demonstrate understanding of the social / historical contexts in which these texts were written.

Entry requirements

Minimum of grade B in GCSE English or English Literature. A love of reading!

Assessment

- AS Written Paper: 2 hours (60% of AS marks)
- Coursework: 2500 words (40% of AS marks)
- A2 Written Paper: 2 ½ hours (30%)
- Coursework: 3000 words (20%)
