History at Maiden Erlegh School

Course description

History gives you a broad understanding of why so much of the world is as it is today. As you go through life it is important to be able to understand current affairs and the reasons behind contemporary situations. History encourages pupils to conduct independent research, to identify the problems inherent in a question, to assess the arguments and evidence of others, to analyse primary data, and last, but not least, to construct coherent arguments in an accessible and persuasive way. These are all key skills highly valued by universities and employers. History provides a distinctive education by providing a sense of the past, and an awareness of the development of differing values, systems and societies. Apart from being extremely enjoyable, history also enables students to learn about the past and through it, come to a far better understanding of the present.
