Why Choose Physical Education?

After the success of the London 2012 Olympics, sport and physical education is becoming an extremely important area in today’s society where we are becoming increasingly aware of the benefits of exercise and the use of leisure time. The leisure industry is the fastest growing employment sector in the country, giving rise to many varied career opportunities.

What kind of student is this course suitable for?

Physical Education combines well with other subjects such as Biology, Psychology, Business Studies and Geography which all have linking elements in their curriculum.

The course would be of interest to students who:

  • Have a genuine interest in Physical Education and are looking at a career linked to Physical Education and the sporting world.
  • Would like to improve their own performance in a particular sport looking at the concepts which underline physical performance.
  • To understand where sport and P.E originated from and the influences which have moulded it to what we see today.
  • Is interested in how anatomy and physiology plays a part in how we perform.

Entry requirements

At least 5 GCSEs at grades A* - C including English and Maths. Students are expected to select a minimum of 4 AS subjects in Year 12 and continue to follow a minimum of 3 subjects to A2 in Year 13.

Preferably, the student applying for the AS Physical Education course should have studied the subject at GCSE Level in Years 10 and 11. If PE has been studied at GCSE at least a grade C must be achieved on the theory paper. It may be possible to transfer from the BTEC PE Course if a Distinction was achieved. A GCSE at Double Science would be advisable.
